As we had mentioned before, the construction industry in Sydney is growing quickly! That’s why you should be aware of your rights as a worker. Whether you’re already in the workforce or looking to start your construction career, here’s some information you need to know!

  • Safety as a fundamental right: Every worker in New South Wales deserves a safe work environment. This includes personal protective equipment, proper training on safe work practices, and the ability to raise concerns about unsafe conditions. The government agency responsible for enforcing workplace rights is SafeWork NSW. You can revise their codes of practice and fact sheets for construction work on their website

  • Fair wages and conditions: Know that the construction industry sets minimum pay rates, overtime entitlements and leave allowances. It’s important to check the arrangements before accepting a job. The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) provides resources to help you identify your rights regarding pay and conditions.

  • Worker’s compensation: As a construction worker you’re entitled to worker’s compensation benefits. If you suffer a work-related injury or illness, the compensation can cover medical expenses, support payments and rehabilitation services. The government agency responsible is icare NSW, helping workers get the best advice in case of injury or illness.
  • Right to breaks and entitlements: In a demanding industry, you have the right to take breaks throughout the workday. This includes meal and rest breaks outlined in the New South Wales breaks at work laws. In addition, you have the right to annual leave, sick leave and personal leave as outlined by the employment contract.

Remember that understanding your rights is essential for ensuring a safe and fair work environment in Sydney’s construction industry. If you have questions, look for help in government agencies or legal professionals to clear up your questions or concerns.
